We make customised turned and machined components in brass, zinc and stainless steel for the sanitaryware, plumbing, electrical and automotive industries. It is a build-to-print business, which means a very high volume of purchase, job-work and sales entries flowing into Tally every day.
For years, the way we saw our own position was this: someone asked the accounts team, and the accounts team made a report. Debtor ageing, creditor position, monthly registers, everything worked that way. It was reliable, but it was slow, and it meant our directors were reviewing a picture that was already a few days behind.
When RD Paytech first approached us, our questions were not about what the product could do. We are an audited business. Our concerns were whether anyone would have to open a port on our network, whether anything could write back into our books, and where our data would physically sit.
The answers were good ones. The connection only goes outward from our machine, so nothing is exposed inbound. Access is strictly read-only. Our data stays in an isolated, encrypted environment inside India, and every query that is run is logged. They sat with our IT people and took them through the whole design rather than handing over a brochure. That is what got this approved internally.
Once it was running, the value showed up quickly. Our management now asks for a creditor position or a debtor ageing in plain English on a phone and has it in seconds, including while travelling between the plant and a customer. Our finance team has been pulled out of the report-making business and put back on closing, reconciliation and control work, which is where they should have been all along.
We did not have to change a single thing about how we keep our accounts. That was the condition, and it was met.
